Cooper was beginning to realise just how much of a burden his job was. He used to thrive on it, and the travel was an awesome added-extra, but with his baby brother's life in such turmoil these past twelve months, it was beyond painful for Cooper to deal with being away every time Blaine needed him. When he got the call from their mother this time, Cooper had been in the middle of a conference in Melbourne, Australia, and hadn't even been able to take the call. He got the voicemail after, though, and his blood ran cold. Why could those kids just not catch a break? It hurt and it wasn't fair. Blaine should never have to feel pain like this, yet it never stopped for him.
And Cooper had wanted so desperately to drop everything and run, but it had been near impossible to get a flight and then he got grounded on a stopover in Sydney due to severe thunder storms. It delayed him for a further 48 hours and the only way he could even get a flight was if he took one that had two stopover and a layover. This was the soonest he could make it to New York, and that alone was atrocious considering the emergency. He spent the last leg of his flight literally praying that Kurt would at least hold on a little longer. If anything happened and Cooper wasn't there, he would never, ever be able to forgive himself.
Now he was running down the corridor of the hospital after exiting the elevator. He got intercepted at the security doors of the ward, and showed his ID, explaining that he was Kurt's brother-in-law. That seemed to be enough. He was ushered to the room, and he dumped his bag by the door to go straight over to Blaine sitting vigil at his husband's side. Scooping Blaine up into his arm, Cooper just held him in a protective embrace as he looked at Kurt over Blaine's shoulder. Yes, he was still breathing, the cardiac monitor showed his heart was still beating. That was a tiny silver lining for now. "I'm here, buddy... I'm here..." he murmured breathlessly and nursed the back of his brother's head to drop a kiss to the top of it.
