"I can feel it coming in the air tonight..."
Who: Andrew Pearson and Kurt Hummel-Anderson
What: Painful requests
Where: Kurt and Blaine's home, Scarsdale
When: Tuesday night

After making the drive to Scarsdale after a panicked phone call from Blaine in the middle of the night, Andrew sat on the side of the bed beside Kurt, listening to his chest with his stethoscope. Blaine was downstairs making everyone a cup of tea, Kurt's with honey and lemon at Andrew's suggestion. Blaine was near freaking out, so it would give him something to concentrate on while Andrew examined Kurt. Kurt's cough which he had on and off with the Lymphoma in his chest had gone from dry to wet and rattly. He had been struggling to breathe during the night and Andrew temperature check just revealed a fever of 103. He took the stethoscope from his ears and gave Kurt a small, sympathetic sigh while he pulled Kurt's long-sleeve t-shirt back down gently for him. "It's a chest infection, love. We need to tread really, really carefully with you here or it's going to warp into pneumonia in a snap. I really want to admit you to get you on oxygen and a badass dose of IV antibiotics, but you're going to fight me on that, aren't you?"

Kurt had a runny nose and sore throat too. To anyone else, it would just be a cold and a cough, they would be over it in a week and back on their feet. This could potentially spell tragedy for Kurt if they weren't extremely careful. It had come at the tail end of another chemo round, so it was going to be a tough fight already. Andrew felt a distinct twist in his stomach when he looked at Kurt as a very real sense of dread hit him that if the infection got worst, it could actually kill Kurt. "Please let me take you back Mount Sinai. Just to be on the safe side?"

"I had to find you, tell you I need you. Tell you I set you apart."
Who: Andrew Pearson and Daniel Stewart
What: Long overdue heart-to-hearts
Where: Some popular bar in Manhattan
When: About 3 weeks after Dan fell ill

It was a work night for one of the ER nurse's birthday this time, and Andrew had seriously debated with himself for days on end whether he should even go or not. For one, they would be around booze, and two, the last night like this had basically been the catalyst of him falling off the wagon and having his life yet again crash and burn around him. But he had worked with the nurse since he got the job at Mount Sinai and he knew he had to go. She had even sweet-talked one of the casual medical officers to take Andrew's shift so he could be free. Plus, there was entirely another reason Andrew knew he should go...

He was nursing a Diet Coke and he waited until Daniel had paid for his own drink at the bar and was just walking away to head back to the booth full of nurses he had been sitting. Andrew let out a small, sharp breath and then went over to Dan before he reached the booth of the bar. "Hey," he greeted him with a small flash of a smile. "Do you think we could have a chat? Maybe somewhere a little more private? I think it's well overdue..." he added, knowing Daniel would be well aware of what he was referring to.

What: Doctors and nurses...
Where: Emergency Room, Mount Sinai Hospital
When: Tuesday morning
Rating: Probably mostly innocentish, considering circumstances

Andrew was just at the tail end of a nightshift and the lethargy was setting in heavily. Everything seemed to take so much more effort lately, and whilst he could run on adrenaline (and caffeine) for a shift at work, damn did he feel it when it was over. He was at least relieved he had finally gotten Kurt discharged so he could be home with Blaine and his family for his birthday. They had invited Andrew around, but Andrew had politely declined, with a very doctorly reminder that Kurt was on early discharge and still needed to be on strict bed rest... which could be stretched to the sofa for a little while for his birthday. He had seen both Kurt and Blaine really smile for the first time in months, and that alone was worth it.

But now he had a few days rostered off and he was planning on just sleeping the entire time. He didn't want to face the world, he just wanted to hole up in his apartment, which was painfully quiet an empty without Sam, and sleep the hours away in hopes he might feel better when he woke up. It was probably wishful thinking, but at least he could hope. He was just standing at the Nurses' Station writing some final notes after giving handover to the morning staff when he glanced up and found Daniel heading over to the desk.

Okay, this could be awkward, but Andrew didn't want his workplace to be awkward when it was the only thing keeping him sane and away from the bottom of a bottle right now. He wet his lips, pen paused on the progress note he was working on. "Morning, dude," he greeted him and then signed his name with a flourish at the bottom of the page. He signed his name so damn much these days, he had a cheesy flourish to it. But he was just putting his pen back into the pocket of his labcoat when he did a slight double-take at Daniel, who was standing there looking a bit like a zombie. "Hey, are you okay? You don't look so hot."

Where: Emergency Room, Mount Sinai Medical Center

Rating: It may turn not innocent, who knows

The ER went from being in a bit of a lull to crazy hectic just over the course of Daniel's dinner break. He was working the evening shift that day, and it seemed like it was going to be one of those times where all the cases came out of the woodwork as the evening wore on. It was always the case with the weekend. In fact, he agreed to cut his break ten minutes short just so he could help ply through the initial triage rush of new patient cases.

The triage nurse intercepted him at the Nurses' Station and shoved a file into his hand, looking slightly harassed and trying to tuck some loose strands of her red hair back under her surgical cap. "Bay Eight, a bit of a messy cut hand. Patient's got it elevated. The doc's just held up with a puker in Four, so he'll be a few minutes. His first case of the night, poor dude. He asked if you can clean the hand up a bit so he can see the wound," she reeled off and Daniel just took the file with a nod before she was already hurrying off to her next intake.

Daniel was just approaching Bay Eight as flipped to the patient's front sheet to see the name and age to analyse how he should address them and his eyes widened in surprise. He yanked the curtain back from around the bay, eyebrows shooting up. "Nate? What the hell?!"

"My friends are so depressed, I feel the question of your loneliness"
Who? [livejournal.com profile] jewhawk, [livejournal.com profile] mysongtosing, and [livejournal.com profile] bad2theboner
What? Friendly commiseration?
When? Saturday night, the day after Louise goes back to Ohio
Where? Andy's apartment
Rating: Probably high

It seemed to be the week for people ending majorly serious relationships, between Sam leaving New York (why, Puck had no idea) and ending his engagement to Andrew, and Louise taking Junior... the child who carried Puck's name, regardless of not carrying his blood... and going back to Ohio. If he were honest, Puck wondered what the fuck was going on in the world, when everyone who seemed to finally be finding their feet was having the floor ripped out from under him.

It was that thought process that landed him on Andrew's front step, seeking out some commiseration, and possibly a buddy for a drink or two... or five. If anybody could feel Puck's pain here, it was Andy, and the fact was both of them could probably use somebody to talk to. Despite everything else going on, there was a huge part of Puck that was really worried about Andrew, too. There was far more going on than any one single thing, and Puck knew it. There was the whole situation with Sam for Andrew, and Louise for him. Then there was the fact that Puck's best friend's husband, also known as Andrews former lover, was extremely sick with cancer, and there was no way of knowing what was coming next.

It was all too much, and Puck could seriously go for some time with the guy he'd come to be friends with over the year or so they'd known each other. And if he wasn't mistaken, he was pretty damn sure Andy needed it, too.

After a moment of shifting awkwardly on the step, Puck pressed the button to buzz up to Andy's apartment. He heard Andrew's voice through the box, and told him who it was, waiting quietly until he was buzzed up. Moments later, he was standing outside the doctor's apartment door, swallowing hard against the onslaught of tears that so wanted to come out.

Abigail felt really guilty about asking Pete for his help to track Andrew down and get him home safely, only to abruptly tell him to leave when they got to Andrew's apartment and she saw the complete state of devastation everything was in. It was a disaster area, and there were empty booze bottles strewn all over the place, not to mention the book case toppled over in the middle of the living room with books, picture frames and other items smashed underneath it. She had been stunned and didn't know how to cope. All she knew was that Andrew didn't need an audience for it, nor did he need to know right then that Abigail was dating Pete. That was an introduction that was going to have to wait.

It was not the afternoon after the horrific night before and after hearing Andrew's hangover making him violently ill in the bathroom up the hall, followed by him stumbling back to his bedroom, she finally went through to him with a large bottle of a Pedialite and Gatorade concoction she had mixed up the night before when she saw how much he had trashed himself... and not just on booze, but she could smell stale marijuana and cigarettes on him too.

That wasn't the worst part, though. It had been when she was cleaning up the catastrophic mess in his living room that she came across a USB stick with Sam's name on it. She probably shouldn't have snooped, but considering the fact Sam had apparently left her twin without any warning and Andrew had trashed himself into a stupor, she needed to try and find out what went wrong. Nothing really could have prepared her for what she saw, nor what she read in a letter from Sam she found torn in half under the coffee table. In the blink of an eye, her brother had thrown everything good away and she had no idea why.

She entered his bedroom and set the bottle down on his nightstand. "You cheated on him."

Kurt had something called a myocardial infarction, caused by a pulmonary embolism. In simple terms, a heart attack caused by a blood clot in the arteries of the lung. Unfortunately, it was a rare risk of the chemo with Kurt's form of cancer and even though it was small, in a sense, Kurt's weakened and the fight is a lot harder. We had a lot of work to keep him with us but we managed to remove the clot and he's on medication to thin the blood to prevent it further. We just have to wait to see how he is over the next few hours.

He's in the ICU now. Family only for visitors. Prayers won't hurt.

PS. If anyone has questions, I'm happy to answer them. Blaine's okay with me talking to whoever needs it.

Who? [livejournal.com profile] bad2theboner and [livejournal.com profile] woman_or_a_girl
What? You can't wait around forever...
When? Sunday morning
Where? Mt. Sinai Hospital
Rating: PG-13 to R

Visits to this hospital were getting to be way too common for Quinn, and honestly, if she walked out today and never came back inside again, she wouldn't have minded. No offense meant to Andrew or any of the other people who worked here and did such a great job taking care of Quinn's various and sundry friends who kept ending up sick or injured. But she was sick and tired of said sicknesses and injuries occurring.

She'd texted Andrew to let him know she was on her way, and when she entered the hospital, she took a seat in the ER waiting room, shooting off another quick text to Andrew to let him know she was here.

God, she had a lot to think about. What was she going to do? Keep the baby and lose everyone else? Blaine and Kurt didn't need the added stress of a baby in their house right now of all times. Lucas had made it very clear how he felt about the situation, and as much as Quinn wanted to be angry and tell him what a jerk he was, she couldn't blame him for how he felt. She didn't really want a baby either. And then there was Nick and Jeff. Nick would be an incredible dad, but this wasn't how it was supposed to go at all. If he wanted kids, and he and Jeff got down the road and decided they were ready, they should have the chance to have them on their own time. Not in this rushed, unexpected way.

She was shaken from her thoughts when she spotted Andrew across the room walking toward her, and forced a small smile at him. "Hi there, handsome," she said jokingly. "How's my favorite newly engaged doctor?"

Who: [livejournal.com profile] bad2theboner and [livejournal.com profile] showingnuttage
What: I dare you to let me be your, your one and only
Where: Their apartment, NYC
When: Just after midnight, New Years
Rating: Adult references

Andrew lost count of how many parties he was invited to for New Year when he told people he actually had it off work. He had agreed to work Christmas night, and be on call for five days prior to that if he could get some time off for New Year. He was absolutely fucking knackered. He needed a rest and time to catch up with himself. Kurt's diagnosis had impacted on him a lot, and he knew that if he didn't stop and just have a timeout, he would burn out and that wouldn't help anyone. Initally, he was rostered off for five days, but then his boss ended up giving him a week when she found him downing coffee and Red Bull on the day after Christmas when he had been going strong all night after Kurt and Blaine's wedding.

It was explaining that situation to her that earned him the extra couple of days. She had always been a kind manager, and the 'I didn't sleep before my shift because my friend with cancer was getting married to his husband' really hit a soft spot with her. Sure, it sounded weird when you put it like that, so of course she asked for more details and sat down with Andrew on his break. He ended up telling her a good portion of the story with him and Kurt, and how Kurt and Blaine had come to be some of his closest friends now, with him dating Sam, their old school friend. She told him she had no idea his personal life was so intense, and then apologise for assuming he would be good for Christmas. It meant a lot to Andrew, and even though he felt a little odd talking to his boss about his private life when he didn't usually share it with colleagues, he appreciated her listening and understanding the struggle he had been facing. Not to mention the fact he really did need the week break so he could switch off from work and just relax.

Which is what he did, and hardcore... )

PART TWO

It was stupid, really. Blaine was exictedly nervous about this moment as he stood up on the rooftop garden waiting for Kurt. It was cold and everyone was rugged up in coats, but some opened at the top to reveal their t-shirts with pride. It looked so, so beautiful. There was a garden arch that the girls had threaded twinkling fairy lights all over with some more fresh roses tucked in here and there, and the whole small area was lined with rows of candles in little glass jars. No other decoration was needed, the lights gave off a romantic glow and they all stood gathered around for the short wait until Kurt changed and made it up to the roof. Blaine turned to Puck, flashing him a grin as he let out a long, shaky breath to compose himself, giving his hands a shake to try and keep them warm. Puck, who had his guitar hanging over his shoulder, held his hand up for a bro fist-bump of encouragement and Blaine returned it gratefully before he pulled Puck into a spontaneous smoosh hug anyway, clinging to him for just a few moments.

This was bigger than just confirming their vows to make it legal in New York... )

This was bigger than just confirming their vows to make it legal in New York... )

"I have a confession," Blaine began as he leaned over Kurt lying on the sofa and adjusted the soft blanket over his knees. Once Kurt was adequately untwisted again, Blaine knelt down beside him and held a little wrapped box out on his palm. "I have one more present for you."

All Kurt was seeing was turquiose wrapping with white ribbon, and he knew exactly what that meant. He looked up from the box to Blaine's face with a small, exasperated sigh. "Blaine, don't you think we've already gone just a little bit overboard with the presents already?" he pointed out with a wave of his hand around the room that was covered with piles of presents for all the people who had been sharing Christmas with them. And there were a lot. They had a lot of bodies squished into that apartment that day, but it had been nice to be surrounded by the chaos, even if Kurt had spent most of the day in bed asleep. He was up (reluctantly) really early with everyone else for the present opening and Blaine dressed like an elf to hand out the billion presents shoved in a messy pile under the tree and spilling out over the floor, but the excitement had to come in short bursts and he was crawling back into bed a little while later when everyone else moved on to have Lucky Charms for breakfast. He slept most of the day, right through the Christmas lunch, but got up a little while ago to move from the bed to the sofa so he could spend time with his family and friends.

'Maybe just a little,' Blaine conceded sheepishly, smiling at his husband. )

What: A call for help
Where: Hummel-Hudson Home, Lima Ohio
When: Tuesday afternoon
Rating: PG

Andrew had sent Blaine a text message to see how Kurt was getting on, but it was a phone call that returned the query with Blaine telling Andrew that in the wake of visiting his mom's grave earlier that day, he was really starting to freak out about the cancer thing. Andrew thankfully had a few days off for Thanksgiving. He and Sam were going to be going to Jersey to spend it with Andrew's family before flying to Ohio to spend some time with Sam's. Without any question, their plans got changed and Sam more than understood when Andrew told him he wanted to fly to Ohio to speak to Kurt in person because now was a vital time that he would need to get Kurt to start accepting what the next step in his illness would be before he completely freaked out and started making stupid decisions in his over-emotional state.

They were offered a stand-by flight, and after a six hour wait at La Guardia, finally got one. They were now at Kurt's old home, which was surreal for Andrew because he never made it here himself when they had been dating. Burt and Carole had come to New York a couple of times to visit Kurt, but during that time period, Andrew hadn't gone to Lima with him. Now he was sitting on the side of Kurt's bed waiting for him him to come out of the tiny en suite bathroom of his room while Sam was downstairs with Blaine. This could really be a long process, but Andrew was already worried. He had a gut feeling that he knew what Kurt was going to say to him, and he was going to have his work cut out for him.

Andrew felt guilty, but he had literally forgotten that Jeff was staying with him. He had dropped Kurt and Blaine back at their apartment, helped them inside and then Blaine assured them they were okay from there. Andrew had wanted to protest, but it was about letting them go through the motions. Even the smallest thing could set off a string of emotional outbursts no one needed. He barely remembered cab ride home and it only dawned on his memory that Jeff was there when he entered the apartment and found him sitting on the sofa channel surfing while he ate a bowl of cereal for breakfast.

"Jeff..." Andrew greeted him quietly and then rubbed his hand over his forehead to try and ease the pain that had settled there. He needed Tylenol, and maybe a few stiff drinks, before he could even hope his brain - and heart - would switch off to let him sleep. Sam must still be in bed, and as wonderful as it would be to just crawl into bed and forget the rest of the world existed, it was impossible for Andrew right now. He emptied the pockets of his scrubs and dumped his keys, wallet and phone onto the bookcase, and then stood the large envelope with Kurt's test results against the wall. No doubt, he would trawl all over them again and again until he decided what best to suggest for the next step. He swallowed, and went over to perch on the edge of the arm chair across from the sofa where Jeff was sitting. "Jeff, there's something I need to talk to you about."

It was nearing four in the morning by the time the hospital courier arrived at the doctors' lounge with the bundle of Kurt's reported results, and Andrew was onto his fifth coffee to keep himself away. He was anxious and nervous enough not to give into any lethargy, but he wanted to be in the best form he could be when these results came. He made the choice to keep Kurt until the morning when, as predicted, the anesthetic had knocked him around and he didn't come out of it so well. It was best just to keep him here while it went through his system and he promised them he would get to the discharge first thing so Blaine could take Kurt home to their own bed.

Andrew had resolved to wait for the results... )

When Blaine had first arrived at the hospital with Puck, Kurt had barely just been admitted and taken to his room. He was clearly working hard not to freak out, and luckily Blaine arrived just before he started throwing expletives at staff because he was so on edge. Andrew had given him a Valium to calm him down before the tests and he was napping now while they waited for the next step in everything. But Blaine couldn't take this crap anymore. He had been good up to this point, biting his tongue and just letting Andrew and Vanessa go through the motions of what Kurt needed to prep for the procedures, but enough was enough.

He hovered in the door of Kurt's room, simultaneously watching his husband napping and watching up the corridor for Andrew to return. As soon as he saw him in the distance, now adorned in scrubs, Blaine stepped out into the hall and cornered him by the vending machine. "You can tell me what the fuck is going on now," he demanded, voice hushed but the words were bit out pointedly.

Andrew would be lying if he didn't admit to being taken aback by how poorly Kurt looked when he arrived at the doctors' surgery. The way Kurt was washing over everything, Andrew really was willing to concede that it was just a cold and this check-up was merely precaution and a script for some standard antibiotics would cut it. But when Kurt arrived, he just looked ill. He was paler than usual, and although the designer labels were in place, his hair had no product in it, his eyes were red-rimmed and puffy like he hadn't slept much and Andrew didn't need to even lay a finger on him to see his gland were swollen.

Now they were sitting in the waiting room while Vanessa finished with her latest patient so Andrew could crash her room for a bit to give Kurt his check up, and Kurt sat beside him meticulously filling out the new patient questionnaire for the surgery. Only, he soon clipped the pen under the holder of the clipboard and then started to peel his scarf off and undo his jacket, and Andrew glanced at him, seeing he was sweating now, where he had been shivering ten minutes before when he first arrived. "Just a cold, my ass," Andrew commented with a small sigh as he turned in his seat to help Kurt peel out of his knee-length leather jacket. "You're so run down, you couldn't even shake the sniffles, if you were actually sniffling... which is what people do when they, you know, actually just have a cold."

What? That awkward moment when your friend's ex is awesome.
When? A couple of days post Niff night of drunkenness
Where? Apple Store
Rating: PG-13ish

A couple of nights in a hotel bed had done little to improve Jeff's mood, and neither had the fact that his iPhone decided to start acting glitchy the night he'd left Kurt's place. It had cut off on him in conversation with Kayla a couple of times, which he wasn't sure whether to blame on the phone, or on karma. He hated few things more than lying, and he was doing it every time he talked to her... forcing himself to put on a happy face... or voice, as he was avoiding her requests for video chat online by saying he wasn't feeling well, and he looked like crap. She'd offered, most condescendingly, to come take care of him, but he'd declined. He couldn't see her right now.

Standing in line at the store, waiting for someone to check his phone, Jeff glanced around to see a familiar face... Kurt's ex, Andrew... He recognized him right away from a week or so before when he'd stopped by Kurt's place to drop something off for Blaine. He remembered being struck with how good-looking the guy was, and that it said a lot for him that he was willing to help Blaine so much after Blaine had more or less stolen his boyfriend and married him.

He wasn't really sure if Andrew was close enough to Kurt to have heard anything about what happened, or the fact that Jeff had just left, but he figured it was rude not to say hi, especially if Andrew noticed that he was there and had ignored him. He caught the other guy's eye and gave him a friendly, if subdued, wave.
